英語長文の問題です。和訳してください。塾の先生からもらったプリントなのですが模範和訳がありません。翻訳サイトを用いましたが、しっくりきませんでした。そこで皆さんのお力を借りたいと存じます。A classic problem calling for productive, insightful thinking is the nine dot problem, shown in the figure. The task is to connect the nine dots with four straight lines, without lifting your pencil from the paper in drawing the line. The solution to the problem, as you can see in Panel B of the figure, requires drawing the lines outside the boundaries of the nine dots. Researchers tasted college student’s ability to solve the nine dot problem. In the control group, the students made 20 attempts at solution. As expected, not a single participant hit upon the correct solution. In three experimental groups, the researchers allowed the participants 10 attempts before introducing hints designed to generate insight into the problem. One group of students was told to “go outside the square.” A second group was told the same, plus was shown the initial straight line leading from the lower, right-hand dot to the upper, left-hand dot. A third group was also told to “go outside the square.” And was shown the initial line plus the second vertical line extending down the left side of the square and past the lower left dot. In other words, the groups were given more and more explicit direction as to the solution. Only 20% of the students solved the problem with the hint to “go outside the square.” This is an improvement but is not as dramatic as one might expect if the only difficulty facing the students was the incorrect assumption about the lines fitting within the square. The researchers stated that another difficulty faced the students; namely, the problem space is too large in that there are too many possible arrangements of lines. By giving one or two of the lines, the researchers expected to reduce the size of the problem space, making the solution more apparent. they succeeded in doing so.
